Calculus and Analytic Geometry for Science and Engineering
Grading: Your course grade will be based on the maximum of the following two weighted averages:
20% Quizzes, 20% Midterm I, 20% Midterm II, 40% Final Exam
20% Quizzes, 20% Best Midterm Exam, 60% Final Exam
Credit Hours: 4 (2 credits if taken after Math 10C)
Prerequisite: AP Calculus BC score of 3, 4, or 5, or Math. 20B with a grade of C– or better
Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals, fifth edition, by James Stewart; published by Brooks/Cole; 2003. We shall cover parts of chapters 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the text.
Quizzes: There will be three (3) quizzes given during the lecture on certain Fridays; please see the course calendar for the dates of the quizzes. Your cumulative quiz grade will be based on the best 2 of the 3 quizzes. Each quiz will consist of two or three problems taken directly from the assigned homework and you will be allowed twenty (20) minutes to complete each quiz. No notes (or books) will be allowed during the quizzes. There will be no makeup quizzes for any reason.
Midterm Exams: There will be two (2) midterm exams. See the course calendar for the dates of the midterm exams. You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to each midterm exam. There will be no makeup exams.
Final Exam: The final examination will be held at the following date, time and place.
Final Exam: Monday March 20 8 - 11 a.m.
You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to the final examination. Bring your personal photo ID to the exam. It is your responsibility to ensure that you do not have a schedule conflict involving the final examination; you should not enroll in this class if you cannot take the final examination at its scheduled time.
Homework: Homework will be assigned on the course homework page and should be completed by the indicated due date. Homework will not be collected; your homework will be evaluated by your performance on periodic quizzes and midterm exams. You should make every effort to complete the homework assignments and seek help with problems you have not been able to solve. You can get help with the homework assignments in the Calculus Tutoring Lab (APM 2402). A Student Solutions Manual (available in the Bookstore) has complete solutions for odd-numbered problems in the text.
Calculus Tutoring Lab: A tutoring lab for Calculus students will generally be open Monday through Friday, 9:00am - 8:00pm in APM 2402; please see the Calculus Tutoring page and follow the link in the Tutoring Lab section for a complete listing of dates and times when the tutoring lab is open. There will usually be at least 2 tutors and/or TAs available to help with homework, calculators, and coursework. We strongly recommend that you make use of the Calculus Tutoring Lab.
Reading: Reading the sections of the textbook corresponding to the assigned homework exercises is considered part of the homework assignment and it will be expected that you read the assigned material in advance of each lecture. You are responsible for material in the assigned reading whether or not it is discussed in the lecture.
Calculators: A TI-85 or -86 calculator, or one less powerful, may be used during the class and during the midterm exams. Please do not bring a calculator with the capability of storing notes in it. The TI-89 and -92 are not allowed. You will be expected to show all relevant computational steps: No credit will be given for unsupported answers gotten directly from a calculator.
Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is considered a serious offense at UCSD. Students caught cheating will face an administrative sanction which may include suspension or expulsion from the university.
